Deleting Image Files When Using Fax Aging

January 1st, 2009

Fax aging has become an important issue to some of our customers. In RightFax 9.3 FP1b HF1 or higher, when using fax aging, the record of the fax is deleted. However, the image file still remains. This change in functionality is documented in the updated administrator’s guide (Page 259). If you want to delete the image file, please add the registry key listed below.

Under HKLMSoftwareRightFaxFaxServer, add a DWORD key named DeleteImagesOnPurge. Set the value to 0.

The services must be restarted for the change to take effect. This will not delete prior image files that would have been aged prior to the change, so these must be deleted via command prompt or Orphan.

Phase B Transmission Errors – What do they mean and how to troubleshoot

November 1st, 2008

During the transmission process of faxing documents, different transmission errors can result under unsatisfactory conditions. One common transmission error is a Phase B error, which can be the result of many different problems.

In troubleshooting, the first step is to isolate if this is related to inbound faxing, outbound faxing, or both. If this is outbound to one specific number, this is a problem on the destination’s equipment. If the problem occurs on inbound and/or outbound faxing using multiple numbers, confirm all Fax Board settings to match the settings that your Telco is providing. Also, confirm that shielded cable, not CAT5 cable, is being used to ensure line noise is not causing problems. Placing a call to a fax number on your RightFax server from a standard telephone can assist in determining line noise. If there is heavy static over the fax tone, this is an indicator of line noise. After confirmation of shielded cable being used, place a call to your Telco to have your fax lines inspected.

Changing the name of the RightFax server in 9.x

August 1st, 2008

In some situations, it may be necessary to change the name of a RightFax server. In RightFax 9.x, the SQL server contains information about the RightFax NetBIOS name that allows the server to authenticate. The tables containing these NetBIOS names must be changed to the new name of the server. Also, all RightFax registry keys must be updated to the new server name.

Telco Settings and RightFax 9.3

July 1st, 2008

With the September 1, 2008, deadline for RightFax 8.7 End-Of-Life coming closer, most of you are planning your upgrade to RightFax 9.3. At this stage, it is very important to document the Telephony settings from your existing server.

  • For all Brooktrout TR1034 boards and most TR114 boards, the RightFax specific Telephony settings are moved from the RightFax BoardServer Module to the RightFax DocTransport module and use Brooktrout’s Configuration tool. To document your existing settings, open your RightFax BoardServer module.
  • For Analog boards, document all settings in the “Global Board Settings” and your channels.
  • For T1 boards, document the same settings for Analog boards, along with all settings in the Digital Configuration Wizard.

With these documented, it will be easy to confirm and implement your Telephony Properties into the Brooktrout Configuration Tool.
